An event designed to increase the understanding of the complexity of youth mental health was held at Crossroads Church in Florence. The event was sponsored by Ethan's Purpose, the Boone County School District and Crossroads Church.
All four Boone County High School bands and choirs came together to perform a beautiful concert of uplifting music organized by Boone County High School band director Dan Barnhill and his wife Ryle High School choral director Lauren Barnhill. There were 180 Band students and 60 choir students performing. The event began with music and song, then the Keynote Speaker, former sports reporter turned mental health advocate, Brandon Saho of The Mental Game. Saho shared his story and how his podcast is a safe place to share your story. Mr. Saho says talking about mental health saves lives and encouraged people to talk to someone before doing something drastic. Following the keynote address the audience was broken up into break out sessions; one for the adults and the other for students where they talked about how to break the mental health stigma and encouraged seeking help.
Mental health professionals and resources were available during this free event.
